Situational Awareness for Civilian Survival
Learn to read your environment for threats before they materialize, using awareness levels and pre-attack recognition to stay safe.
Step-by-Step Guide
Set Your Awareness Level
Use the Cooper Color Code. White: unaware (dangerous). Yellow: relaxed alertness, scanning environment. Orange: specific threat identified, planning response. Red: taking action. Stay at Yellow in public at all times.
Scan Every New Environment
On entering any space: locate exits, identify cover vs concealment, note who is present and their behavior. Takes 10 seconds. Repeat when environment changes.
Recognize Pre-Attack Indicators
Watch for: target glancing (looking at you then away repeatedly), grooming behaviors (touching face/hair nervously), clothing inconsistent with weather (concealing something), pacing or position changes, people moving to cut off your exits.
Avoid Standing Out
In post-collapse environments: dress like locals, do not display expensive items, avoid eye contact with groups, walk with purpose not urgency, do not carry more than you can run with.
Trust Your Instincts
Fear is information. If something feels wrong, leave immediately. Do not stay to be polite. Do not investigate unusual noises. Move away from conflict, not toward it.
